Palaeontologists have identified a new species of long-necked dinosaur from fossils found in Thailand's Kalasin Province – the first of its dinosaur family ever discovered outside ChinaPalaeontologists have identified a new long-necked dinosaur species from fossils discovered in north-eastern Thailand, dating back around 150 million years. In 2008, a local man in north-east Thailand came across fossil fragments near a site called Phu Noi that he thought looked like serpent scales. More than 90% of the material excavated from the site turned out to be dinosaur fragments. However, what made the find stand out is that Mamenchisauridae fossils had previously only ever turned up in China, so finding one in Thailand got the researchers scratching their heads. CT scans revealed distinctive vertebrae and air-cavity structures that have set Uragasaurus kalasinensis apart from every previously known dinosaur species.
