A long-awaited Gig Workers’ Bill in Malaysia has finally seen the light of day after the Dewan Negara, the Senate, approved its passing on 9 September 2025. The date, “9.9,” commonly associated with online sales campaigns run by Malaysia’s e-commerce platforms, now carries far greater meaning for the gig workers whose labour makes those campaigns possible. The Bill had been delayed twice for tabling in Parliament, once in December 2024 and again in March 2025. I am confident UNI-MLC will continue working with its partners for the best implementation of the Bill.”With the passage of the Gig Workers’ Bill, Malaysia is now the second country, after Singapore, in Southeast Asia, to have adopted concrete legislative measures to include gig workers in the labour framework.
