France passes new legislation banning social media for children under 15
[]
JURIST – News
French lawmakers on Tuesday passed a bill that would ban social media for youth under the age of 15 in an effort to safeguard youth mental health, eradicate cyberbullying, and prevent extreme screen addiction.
For a bill to pass, it needs to be proposed by either the prime minister or members of Parliament before being passed on to a parliamentary committee.
While the the National Assembly wanted a general media ban for anyone under 15, the Senate wanted targeted bans where certain socials could be available with parental permission.
A specialized parliamentary committee debated for almost four months to come up with a unified draft in which social media bans were in effect for children under 15 years of age.
The stabbing triggered an investigative parliamentary committee into the negative effects of social media on youth.
