UNI Global Union is calling on affiliates worldwide to sign and share a petition launched by media and entertainment union, Bectu, which demands an end to long hours culture in film and TV production in the United Kingdom.
Spencer MacDonald, Bectu National Secretary for London Production & Regional Production Division, warned that current working practices across the global film and TV industry are becoming increasingly unsustainable, driving high stress levels and poor mental and physical health, and pushing experienced professionals out of the sector.
Without urgent action from employers, he said, the industry risks not only its workforce’s wellbeing but also its long-term resilience and productivity.
The petition builds on international momentum generated at the Cannes Film Festival, where Bectu and French trade unions raised awareness of the harmful impact of excessive working hours on crew members’ health, wellbeing and family life.
