Zhang’s research focuses on modernizing the electricity infrastructure and transitioning the industry to incorporate alternative energy sources and energy efficiency technologies. He directs the Design and Optimization of Energy Systems Laboratory in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science. The researchers found that by aligning electricity use with times when the grid is supplied with higher amounts of alternative energy sources, consumers could use the same amount of energy without increasing carbon emissions. “I am deeply honored by this recognition from ASME that reflects the collaborative spirit and research excellence of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Jonsson School,” Zhang said. “This recognition is a testament to the hard work of my students and our shared commitment to advance the frontiers of energy systems here at UT Dallas.”
