Councillor Brad Bradford says that if he’s elected mayor in October, he will direct the hiring of 1,000 more police officers. “Toronto has grown by 21% since 2010, with virtually the same number of officers on our streets,” Bradford said. Population rising faster than force sizeIn 2010, Toronto had 5,556 police officers and a population of 2.6 million. On a per capita basis, Toronto has gone from 208 officers per 100,000 residents to 173 officers per 100,000 residents. TPS does have a multi-year hiring plan in place, but that plan would only add another 200 officers by 2029.
