Earlier this spring, a 27-year-old man working at a uranium mine in Northern Saskatchewan was attacked and tragically killed by a black bear in what is believed to be a predatory bear attack. Bear encounters are indeed rare but they do occur, so keep your wits about you and always be bear aware. Statistics show that 92 per cent of all fatal bear attacks are the result of predatory male bears. Being aware and prepared for a potential predatory bear attack requires at minimum bear spray, and knowledge that as rare as they are, predatory attacks do occur every year in all parts of the country. That summer six people were killed in fatal bear attacks.
