New safety guidance to keep young volunteers safe

New guidance has been published by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) for heritage railway and tramway operators to ensure the correct safeguards are in place when they employ young volunteers.
Heritage railways rely on volunteers and are often places where young people aged from 14 to the minimum school leaving age first discover they have an interest in railways, engineering, customer service, or heritage preservation.

Examples are provided of many activities suitable for young volunteers, so long as risks are properly assessed, ait nd emphasises that volunteers must have the right supervision and training.
