Many Times I Have Raised a Glass…
[]
Up Here Publishing - The Voice of Canada's Far North
Five times, I drove for hours through Armenian mountains with two or three five-litre bottles to collect water from a spring in the remote fishing village of Karenis.
In 2024, 17 of 25 Nunavut water treatment plants had health or safety violations and three of them were put under public health orders to fix the problems.
After a muffled click of our two plastic bottles, Kooneeliusie and I take a sip of the freshly collected water.
“It’s the best water in the world.”
I ask Kooneeliusie whether he thinks that, too, that Qikiqtarjuaq water is the best in the world because you must work to get it.
