Transport for Wales has opened a new £12 million bogie drop facility at Canton rail depot in Cardiff for the maintenance and servicing of its fleet of new trains. Previously, trains had to be sent elsewhere for specialist maintenance, but they can now be serviced on site in Cardiff, allowing a quicker turnaround and return to service. The new facility at Canton is entirely separate from the new depot at Taff’s Wells that provides maintenance facilities for the new Valley Lines trains. Canton depot in Cardiff has a long history going back to steam days, and RailAdvent recently reviewed a book looking at its time as a diesel locomotive maintenance depot from 1964 until its closure in 2004.
