Article contentThe Brockville Psychiatric Hospital has always had an allure of mystery surrounding it, ever since it opened in the 1890s. Members of the community have often wondered what happens inside those walls, even now after the Brockville Psychiatric Hospital is long gone. In 2000, the former psychiatric hospital was transferred from the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care to The Royal, which is the organization that still runs it today. The Royal is a mental illness treatment, teaching and research hospital headquartered in Ottawa. Its Brockville campus focuses on patients with complex mental illness and addiction who have been found not criminally responsible for their actions by the courts.
