The “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge (DDWS) reported that thanks to a birder in Pennsylvania who was watching the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge’s live webcam, the refuge was able to notify the Sanibel Fire and Rescue District, prompting a smoke investigation that led to response to a residential fire. Sponsored by the Gardner Families and the Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau, the webcam provides hours of immersive refuge views. Viewers can watch during daylight hours and explore the following adjustable camera views: Mudflat & Zoom, Observation Tower & Zoom, Rookery Island & Zoom, Estuary Northeast, and Estuary Southeast. The DDWS and refuge extended a heartfelt thank you to local first responders, including the Sanibel fire district, Captiva Island Fire Control District, Iona-McGregor Fire District, South Trail Fire & Rescue District, Sanibel Police Department and Lee County EMS.
