Calling the devastation “enormous”, Abdullah urged the Government of India to announce a comprehensive special relief package to support rehabilitation of affected families and reconstruction of damaged infrastructure. Abdullah also praised Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for what he described as a swift response to the crisis. Damage assessment of houses, crops and other property is also underway to facilitate compensation, he added. Meanwhile, Abdullah raised questions over the extensive waterlogging witnessed in Srinagar during the recent rainfall, saying it had cast serious doubts on the effectiveness of the Smart City project implemented before the elected government assumed office. He demanded an independent technical and financial audit of the Srinagar Smart City project to examine its planning, execution, quality of work and adherence to engineering standards.
