The murder trial of former Transkei Security Branch police officer Gcinisiko Dandala (68), who is accused of the 1985 murder of anti-apartheid activist Bathandwa Ndondo, has been postponed to 27 July after the presiding judge recused herself following concerns raised by the defence over her impartiality. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said the defence questioned Judge Buyiswa Majiki's impartiality because she had been a student activist at the University of Transkei (Unitra) during the same period as Ndondo. The defence also argued that she had participated in protests calling for the arrest of those responsible for his murder. His activism and opposition to apartheid policies resulted in repeated detention under state security laws and ultimately made him a target of the then Transkei Security Branch. According to the NPA, Ndondo was abducted from his home in Cala on 24 September 1985 by members of the Transkei Security Branch and Vlakplaas askaris.
