Louisiana Bans Debit Card Surcharge Fees Starting August 1

Our preferred method of payment involves some type of plastic, whether that might be credit card, debit card or gift card.
On average, in Louisiana, a surcharge (an extra fee added at checkout for using a credit card) is capped by state and credit card company rules.
And currently that 2% fee, can also (and most often does) apply to any purchase made with a debit card.
In an article from consumerfinancialserviceslawmonitor.com, we read that with this new law, retail businesses are officially prohibited from adding extra fees or surcharges for customers who choose to pay with a debit card.
Might want to consider this the next time you present that card and the cashier asks you "debit or credit".
