If you've gotten used to seeing speed cameras only on major highways, that could soon change.
New York is expanding its Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement Program, meaning drivers could start seeing speed cameras in nearly every state Department of Transportation construction zone, not just on controlled-access highways.
More Work Zones Will Now Have Speed CamerasSince the program launched in 2023, automated speed cameras have only been used in select work zones along major highways.
How the Work Zone Speed Cameras WorkThe cameras only enforce speed limits when construction crews are actively working in the zone.
If a vehicle is detected traveling above the posted work zone speed limit, the system records the violation, and a citation is mailed to the vehicle's registered owner.
