Washington State University reported last week potato psyllid numbers are climbing rapidly across the Columbia Basin. Psyllids were detected in 97% of monitored potato fields, with trap counts well above normal for mid-summer. Researchers say third-generation adults are now emerging, and insects may also be moving from harvested or vine-killed fields into green potato fields. In addition, WSU confirmed the first potato psyllid carrying the zebra chip bacterium has been confirmed this season. The bacterium is spread by infected psyllids and can cause significant damage to potato crops.
