Benton Harbor Area Schools is receiving a state grant of more than $12 million for building improvements. The Michigan Department of Education has announced a total of $224 million in grants for schools statewide intended to address critical needs like heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and roofs. Benton Harbor Area Schools is among the recipients, with $12.3 million coming the district’s way to replace the roofs and HVAC systems at Fair Plain Middle School and Benton Harbor High School. The state says Michigan schools have major infrastructure needs that they haven’t been able to fund, something that’s evidenced by the nearly $1.8 billion in grant requests that came in. Meanwhile, Dowagiac Union Schools is being awarded just under $4.3 million as part of the same program, the only other Southwest Michigan school district on the list.
