Firefighters over the weekend were able to contain four wildfires ignited by lightning in the White River National Forest, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
The four fires — the Boiler Creek Fire in the Rifle Ranger District, the Bear Wallow Fire also in the Rifle Ranger District, the Hahn Creek Fire in the Blanco Ranger District and the Lake Creek Fire in the Eagle-Holy Cross Ranger District — were each reportedly less than a quarter of an acre.
Firefighters will continue to patrol from the air and the ground to detect any other wildfire that starts from lightning, the White River National Forest said in a Facebook post Monday morning.
Officials said it can take several days for a fire started by lightning to put off enough smoke that it can be located.
As the monsoon season kicks off , more thunderstorms are expected across the Western Slope throughout the week that could bring more lightning as well as moisture to the area, according to forecasters.
