Andy Burnham’s first significant policy change is to cut VAT on energy billsAndy Burnham has announced an £850 million tax cut on energy bills to help ease the cost-of-living crisis in his first significant policy as Prime Minister.
Funding for that scheme was due to have come from savings within existing departmental budgets, which will now be reprioritised to fund the VAT cut.
“We’re taking immediate action to cut taxes on energy bills, put more money in people’s pockets and bring back hope.”
For households with dual fuel bills the VAT cut will only apply to the electricity used, not gas, Downing Street said.
