Autistic people experience poorer mental and physical health and live shorter lives than the general population. Recent estimates suggest that one in three autistic people has experienced suicidal ideation and nearly one in four has attempted suicide. Many participants commented that the NHS’s limited range of mental health services was not suitable for ‘people like us’. This study also corroborates findings that certain gender groups may experience even greater barriers to accessing NHS support. The authors note that policy commitments must lead to meaningful service changes, such as autism-informed training for healthcare professionals, alternatives to phone-based appointment booking, and flexible, autism-adapted mental health services.
