The National Prosecuting Authority has obtained a forfeiture order for properties valued at about R326 million that were allegedly bought with money looted from the Tembisa Hospital. The forfeiture order is a sequel to the ongoing investigation into the looting of over R800 million from the hospital, and exposed by slain whistle-blower, Babita Deokaran. The NPA said the forfeiture order, granted on Monday, will see the state seize the properties held by the so-called Maumela syndicate, led by businessman Hangwani Maumela, the alleged head of a criminal network implicated in the systemic looting at Tembisa Hospital. NPA spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago, said the forfeiture order includes high end residential property in affluent areas and luxury vehicles, including two Lamborghini motor cars valued at nearly R18 million each. The SAS established that 14 entities controlled by the Maumela syndicate apparently irregularly and unlawfully benefited from contracts from the Tembisa Hospital with a cumulative value more than R400 million,” Kganyago added.
