Autism spectrum disorder (ASD or autism) is a neurodevelopmental condition that starts in late infancy or early childhood and persists throughout life. As a result, symptoms more commonly associated with autistic girls like camouflaging aren’t even included in standardized assessments, making it more likely that girls will slip through the cracks. Similarly, autistic girls are also more likely to demonstrate other mental health conditions than boys, especially anxiety and depression. These mental health issues will often overshadow autistic characteristics during assessment, and girls will end up with an anxiety or depression diagnosis instead of one for autism. We still have a long way to go in terms of tools for diagnosing autism in girls.
