One of IAM’s four IP Hall of Fame inductees for 2025, Manny Schecter served as IBM’s Chief Patent Counsel between 2009 and 2023 – a period during which the company was consistently one of the top filers of US patents. To mark Schecter’s IP Hall of Fame entry, IAM caught up with the veteran patent strategist at IPBC Global 2025 in Boston, where we asked him to share insights from his long career. Schecter spoke about the challenges he has faced, shared tips on how to interact with business leaders, offered advice to younger lawyers and raised concerns about the growth of anti-patent narratives.
