The Maxwell-Squire Building in downtown Steamboat Springs has been officially added to the Steamboat Springs Register of Historic Places after meeting the city’s criteria for historical and architectural importance, according to a statement released on Monday.
Named for a Steamboat Springs founder, James P. Maxwell, the Maxwell-Squire Building was the largest commercial building in the town for over four decades.
Since its opening in 1909, the building has housed generations of businesses, including Lyon’s Corner Drug, which continues a pharmacy tradition dating back to the Chamberlain Gray Drug Store.
“The Maxwell-Squire Building isn’t just significant because of its architecture — it’s significant because of the memories it holds,” said Historic Preservation Planner Caitlin Berube-Smith in the statement.
“The owner’s decision to place this iconic structure on our local register makes the Maxwell-Squire Building one of four structures in our Downtown National Register District that are safeguarded from demolition,” she added.
