Two members of the Steamboat Springs City Council have joined the Routt County commissioners in opposing a proposed federal oil and gas lease sale north of Hayden, arguing the move could threaten water, wildlife, recreation and the region’s long-term economy. In a comment letter submitted Friday , City Councilors Gail Garey and Amy Dickson urged the U.S. Forest Service to deny consent for the lease sale covering about 13,850 acres in the Hahns Peak-Bears Ears Ranger District. “The consent to lease decision now before the Forest Service is the decision that determines whether they become available for future oil and gas development.” The 30-day public comment period on the proposal closed Friday, meaning Forest Service officials will now review all submitted comments. They will then respond to “substantive comment topics” and use those comments to update the draft environmental assessment “if appropriate,” said Routt National Forest Service Public Affairs Specialist Aaron Voos.
