Kingston Community Health Centres is hosting a special event to bring hepatitis C awareness and health-care services to the community. “Hepatitis C is often called the ‘silent killer’ because many people have no symptoms until serious liver damage has already occurred,” a release from KHSC stated. “This World Hepatitis Day, KCHC’s Street Health Centre is reminding the community that hepatitis C is preventable, treatable and curable, and that free testing, treatment and harm-reduction services continue to be available for people who need them most.” Hepatitis C, a virus that affects the liver and is most commonly spread through blood-to-blood contact, can infect individuals for years without any visible symptoms. Jen Mulvale, the hepatitis C nurse with KCHC, emphasized in an interview with the Whig that anyone can be exposed to the virus that causes hepatitis C — all they have to have experienced is an exposure to “someone else’s blood, somewhere.”
