Professor Bilal El-Zahab and team at Florida International University have found a way to solve the biggest issue with lithium-sulfur batteries: rapid capacity decline. By tackling the key bottleneck in the chemical reaction and introducing a platinum-based catalyst, this innovation has the potential to bring lithium-sulfur batteries to the mainstream. Lithium-ion batteries today are not cutting it because of two main issues. Lithium-sulfur batteries have the potential of exceeding the performance of lithium-ion today by almost three times. In addition, lithium-sulfur batteries do not have any nickel, do not have any cobalt, do not have any limited-supply-chain metals.
