Yet over the past two decades or so, media coverage of climate change in the Middle East has been among the lowest in the world. Climate change can increase the likelihood of violent conflict by intensifying resource scarcity and displacement, while conflict itself accelerates environmental damage. The lack of climate coverage in the Middle East is because media outlets there face a number of structural problems. We have found that, while climate change is becoming a more important topic in the country, there are still many barriers preventing a coherent climate change discussion there. While this facilitates the advancement of climate change discussions, it can distance climate coverage from the local context and knowledge.
