At an adjudication hearing of the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) today, Pavel Konosonok, 38, compared his treatment by the department to "people in Nazi Germany". Three jobseeker's payments were sent to the post office but were never collected by Mr Konosonok. Mr Konosonok said "people in Nazi Germany were treated better", adding: "I'm not surprised that some people commit suicide after dealing with social welfare." He was asked to clarify by Mr Murphy whether the department asking him to attend Athlone Post Office constituted a "Nazi German approach". Asked by Mr Murphy why he hadn't collected his welfare entitlements from the post office, Mr Konosonok – who refused to take an oath or affirmation before giving evidence – replied: "I don't have to explain."
