Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department is launching a search after a bone discovered Wednesday in the Toomsuba community was determined to be human. In a news release, the department said it was contacted at approximately 2:30 p.m. after a dog discovered the bone near Highway 11/80 and Northshore Drive near Lake Tom Bailey. Investigators contacted experts to help determine if the bone was human. “This afternoon after consulting with Coroner Stella McMahan and other officials associated with the state’s crime lab, it has been determined that the bone that was found yesterday afternoon is of human origin,” the department announced in an update posted to social media Thursday. “The Sheriff’s department is currently coordinating with other agencies in order to begin a search to locate any other remains that may be in the area.
