Had it not been for reporter Don Hill’s careful and compassionate work, Corey may have become just another statistic. Instead, Hill gave Corey a face and a story — one that many of us can relate to on some level. This had been relayed to Hill by Jimmy Dawson, a member of the River City Rescue Mission, who knew Corey. Dawson also shared that Corey was a good person who lived in an encampment near the Ameristar Casino hotel. From the story Hill wrote, neither of the men from River City shared Corey’s story of why he was homeless, but one thing was evident, Cory knew how to love.
