Two reports commissioned by Arts Council England highlight the barriers museums face to engaging children and young people along with examples of how institutions are seeking to overcome them. Children and Young People Engaging with Museums, authored by the Group for Education in Museums (GEM), examines the relationship between young people and museums, drawing insights from a survey of 126 museums and a roundtable discussion with 42 heads of learning from museums across England. The report also cited museum staffing capacities being squeezed due to reductions in local authority funding and rising costs associated with visiting museums. Caroline Marcus, chair of GEM, added: “Museums are places of wonder and inspiration that provide enrichment, enhance learning, creativity and wellbeing. These examples show the breadth and huge potential of informal engagement for children, of all abilities, in their early years through to young adulthood.”
