China’s fake TaipeiThe report said the mock court building is linked to a 918-foot underground tunnel and sits beside a replica of Taiwan’s presidential office that was first revealed by Chinese state media in 2015. The think tank noted that the training compound has expanded nearly threefold since 2020, with additional structures resembling Taiwan’s defense and foreign ministries. According to the report, satellite images from July 2022 showed PLA forces erecting roadblocks around the mock presidential office and foreign ministry before armored vehicles entered the area. The following month, images captured a brigade-sized unit training in simulated combat against forces defending the replica presidential palace. “The goal is to put pressure on Taiwan and warn it that even with the tunnels, there’s no escape route,” said Maki Nakagawa, a researcher at the think tank.
