In January of 2009, Variety brought word that a new film set in the same universe as John Carpenter's The Thing (now streaming on Peacock) had entered active development with Ronald D. Moore and Matthijs Van Heijningen Jr. writing and directing, respectively. Moore, of course, seemed the obvious choice for screenwriter, considering his critically acclaimed revamp of another decades-old property: Battlestar Galactica. "It's really a companion piece to the Carpenter version," Moore, who went on to mastermind Outlander and For All Mankind, told IGN (via FirstShowing.net) in March 2009. Like David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick's unmade SYFY miniseries, Ronald D. Moore's vision for the prequel remains an intriguing what-if in a franchise littered with diverting paths — be it the Dark Horse comic book series or the 2002 video game. The 2011 prequel to The Thing is now streaming on Peacock alongside the 1982 original.
