This activity is being fuelled by an AI generated voice scam known as 'vishing', and over 217,000 AI generated scam cases were recorded in the first half of 2025 alone. What's more, Google searches for 'voice vishing' ' and 'how to report a scam call' have skyrocketed by 5,000% in recent months. Vishing is short for voice phishing and uses fraudulent phone calls pretending to be reputable organisations. With winter fuel payment scams on the rise as colder months approach, more Brits are falling victim to AI generated scam as fraudsters are posing as the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP). “If in doubt that the call is real, put the phone down and call back the official phone number to check the call and request is legitimate."
