Updated 12.10pm with details of the rescue attemptFour Maltese people – two men and two women – were killed in a tragic road accident in Croatia when their car veered off the road and into the sea. The accident happened at around 4.20pm on Thursday, on the D8 state road near Bunica, just south of Senj. The car was travelling from Rijeka towards Senj when the driver is believed to have lost control in a left bend. He dove to a depth of 16 metres and tried to open the door of the car damaged by the force of the impact. While the vehicle was being recovered, the body of a woman floated to the surface, hundreds of metres away from the car.
