Spain’s Health Ministry reported Thursday that 3,832 people died from heat-related causes between May 16 and September 30, 2025, an 87.6% increase compared to the previous year, as the country endured its hottest summer on record. According to the ministry, more than 65% of the victims were over 85 years old, while nearly 96% were over 65. The ministry also confirmed 25 direct deaths from heatstroke during the same period, most involving individuals with chronic illnesses, heat-sensitive treatments, or limited access to cooling. The national meteorological agency Aemet said Spain’s average summer temperature reached 24.2 degrees Celsius, the highest since records began in 1961. Scientists continue to warn that climate change is driving more frequent, intense, and unseasonal heatwaves, droughts, and other extreme weather events in Spain.
