He accompanied the post with a statement from Education Minister Karla Trigueros, a military officer recently appointed to lead the ministry. In February 2024, then–Education Minister José Mauricio Pineda announced that “all use of gender ideology has been removed from public schools.” His statement followed Bukele’s remarks at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Maryland, United States. At that event, responding to Catalina Stubbe, Hispanic coordinator of the U.S. group Moms for Liberty, Bukele said: “For me, it is not only important that the curriculum does not include this gender ideology and all these things, but also that parents are informed and have a voice and vote in what their children are going to learn.”The prohibition formalizes the government’s ongoing efforts to reshape public education by excluding gender-related approaches, positioning El Salvador among the countries in the region where inclusive language has been explicitly restricted in schools.
