The Albanese Government’s expulsion of Iran’s ambassador, Ahmad Sadeghi, was the most decisive foreign-policy act of this term – indeed, the first time Australia has expelled an ambassador since World War II. Australia gave Sadeghi 72 hours to leave the country. This drastic step followed the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation’s (ASIO) public assessment that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) directed anti­-Semitic arson attacks in 2024 on Lewis’ Continental Kitchen, a kosher deli in Sydney, and the Adass Israel Synagogue of Melbourne.
