Following the recommendations of Victoria’s Yoorrook Justice Commission, the Allan Labor government and the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria have announced legislation for a treaty between the government and the assembly. The legislation sets out a new Indigenous representative body’s ongoing powers and responsibilities, which is expected to cost $36.8 million annually. Their joint statement said the treaty bill will focus on “how to evolve the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria into an ongoing representative body to provide advice to government and make decisions over matters that affect First Peoples”.
