The UK division of global developer NatPower Group, Natpower UK, has reached an agreement with Sembcorp Utilities (UK), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Energy UK, to deliver a 1GW/8GWh lithium-ion BESS with a £1 billion private investment.
Mike Patrick, CEO of Sembcorp Energy UK described the site, dubbed the Teesside Gigapark, as "one of the UK’s most advanced battery energy storage projects".
Sommadossi, CEO of NatPower UK and NatPower Marine said the BESS site "will be the blueprint for how we combine high-capacity renewable energy storage with the electrification of ports and industry".The company has plans for other gigawatt-scale battery storage projects in the UK underway.
Eelpower Energy aims to reach final investment decisions on up to 1GWh capacity by the end of this year, the consortium said.
The £500 million Eelpower Energy BESS platform was hailed by chancellor of the exchequer Rachel Reeves as being the government’s Plan for Change in action.
