Last week (19 September), Northern Irish economy minister Caoimhe Archibald published the final scheme design (FSD) for a renewables support mechanism. The Renewable Energy Price Guarantee (REPG) scheme, like Contracts for Difference (CfD) operated in Great Britain or the Renewable Energy Support Scheme (RESS) in the Republic of Ireland, is designed to support renewable energy project development in the country. The Northern Irish government has a goal of generating 80% of all electricity in the nation from renewable sources by 2030. By 2027, the Northern Ireland Executive has also committed to support the industry to increase renewable electricity capacity by 40%. Northern Irish renewables support scheme ‘much-needed’The trade body that represents the renewable electricity industry in Northern Ireland, RenewableNI, said the REPG scheme is “the much-needed key to unlock investment in renewables”.
