The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has temporarily suspended the release of emergency preparedness grants to states until they verify their population counts, according to a report from CNN. The agency raised concerns that inflated or inaccurate population data may have led to disproportionate funding allocations in previous years. In 2024, FEMA distributed more than $300 million under this program, with allocations largely based on state population figures. Many local governments rely heavily on these grants to bolster their emergency response capabilities. While the temporary pause could create short-term challenges for preparedness efforts, FEMA maintains that verifying population data is necessary to ensure equitable and transparent distribution of federal funds.
