Coincidentally, both characters are played by the same actor, Richard E. Grant, in the two movies of significance from writer-director Bruce Robinson. Conveniently, both have been restored and will be available on home video from The Criterion Collection this May. It’s as if he and Robinson conspired to make Withnail so detestable the audience couldn’t help but find him endearing. But then a boil appears on Dennis’ clavicle, one that eventually grows a mouth and starts talking to him.
