Attention Stuffed Attention Stuffed Our future rests on our capacity to make digital technology more boring. I myself am the author of a recent philippic against the effects of digital technology on our attention (A Web of Our Own Making). Good work (whether it’s parenting, ranching, plumbing, playing an instrument, or coding) disciplines our attention because it is recalcitrant to our immediate inclinations. The malaise around attention is one emergent feature of this larger alienation from good work. It might also reflect the reality that technologies of attention have grown so absolutely powerful that whoever controls them can stipulate the terms of speech and attention upstream from everything else.
