A U.S. and U.K. warship transited the Taiwan Strait last week drawing protests from Beijing, USNI News has learned.
U.S. guided-missile destroyer USS Higgins (DDG-76) and anti-submarine frigate HMS Richmond (F239) sailed through the strait on Sept. 12, a Pentagon official confirmed to USNI News on Tuesday.
“USS Higgins (DDG-76) and a Royal Navy frigate conducted a routine Taiwan Strait transit Sept. 12 (local time) through waters where freedoms of navigation and overflight apply in accordance with international law,” reads the statement.
Higgins and Richmond sailing through the strait, “sent wrong signals and undermined peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait,” People’s Liberation Army Eastern Theater Command Senior Colonel Shi Yi said, according to the South China Morning Post.
On Friday, Chinese aircraft carrier Fujian (018) sailed through the Taiwan strait during its latest round of sea trials.
