An Indiana man was arrested in connection with online threats that led to last week’s Naval Academy lockdown, during which a midshipman was shot and a law enforcement officer was injured. Justin Fleming, 23, was arrested Sept. 12 on federal charges of “suspicion of sending an online threat through a social media application concerning the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.,” reads a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Indiana. Fleming was a midshipman from June 2021 to Jan. 2024, a Navy official confirmed to USNI News on Tuesday. Following online threats on Thursday, the Naval Academy was placed on lockdown for several hours, with faculty and staff ordered to stay in place while security forces swept the service academy for signs of an active threat. A midshipman sustained injuries from a gunshot wound to the shoulder and was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released,” a Naval Academy spokesperson told USNI News last week.
