As the fourth quarter of 2025 gets under way, hope is dimming for an upside surprise to Chinese oil demand this year. A sluggish economy and the country's continued move toward electric and LNG-fueled road transportation have taken a bite out of China's oil demand growth. The International Energy Agency's latest forecast sees Chinese oil demand growing by just 56,000 barrels per day this year, down from its initial 214,000 b/d forecast. Producer group Opec, which previously pegged China's annual demand growth at 300,000 b/d, has revised its estimate down to 200,000 b/d. The US Energy Information Administration, which has not revised its forecast for 2025, sees Chinese oil demand for the year coming it at 240,000 b/d.
