President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday declaring any attack on Qatar a threat to the peace and security of the United States.
“In the event of such an attack, the United States shall take all lawful and appropriate measures — including diplomatic, economic, and, if necessary, military — to defend the interests of the United States and of the State of Qatar," the order reads.
The order cites Qatar’s continued efforts to help the United States mediate peace throughout the Middle East.
Qatar currently hosts the largest U.S military base in the Middle East, Al Udeid Air Base, which serves as the regional headquarters for U.S. Central Command.
The signing of the executive order also coincided with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the White House.
